Institutional Measures to Contain Spread of the COVID-19.

he WHO is formally responsible for dealing with COVID-19 pandemic at the international level. The WHO is a Geneva-based global organization comprised of 7,000 employees from 15 different countries. It has offices in 150 countries and has six regional offices. The WHO has a large presence in Mexico through its regional office, the Pan American Health Organization.

The WHO has outlined five steps to contain the spread of the virus: (1) Hands: Wash your hands with soap and water and in the absence of such, with an alcohol-based solution; (2) Mouth: Cover your mouth and nose with an elbow when coughing or sneezing; (3) Face: Avoid touching your face: eyes, nose and mouth, to prevent the virus from entering the body; (4) Distance: Maintain a minimum of one meter of social distance from another person (in Mexico this is known as a “healthy distance”); and (5) Symptoms: Familiarize yourself with the symptoms; if you feel ill, stay home; if you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention, but call your healthcare professional prior to visiting a healthcare facility.
